MEMORY BOX | Cassetta dei Ricordi

IMemory box was a social memory experiment to align the past with the present. But, above all, it was a new method to get elderly people able to overcome loneliness, becoming protagonists and relating to other people.
To begin, it was enough to equip oneself with a box, even a shoe box, in which to store dear objects, belonging to the past, through which to reconstruct the chain of memories, relating one's life with the changes that have taken place.
The boxes of memories starts from people to stimulate their self-awareness, it actively involves them since it narrates a personal experience, of one's past, giving it a new representation and in doing so prepares it to welcome the stories and experiences of the other: it is created in this empathy and socialization is facilitated.

Methodology

The methodology revolves around the creation of a memory box. You take a box and fill it with: photographs of family, friends, or yourself; a doll, a puppet, a toy soldier; one or more notebooks from one's childhood or youth; a music cassette, CD, 45 rpm… that have accompanied our life; a book, a collection of poems, loved or written, etc…; an object; in other words, everything an elderly person is attached to.
Once the box is composed, it closes and is left like this until the day of the meeting with the group, when an object is chosen and extracted, thus starting a reconstruction of facts and stories that will produce stories.
It will therefore be necessary to divide the participants into small groups and organize a series of meetings, during which to give everyone the opportunity to tell others their story.

Type of product

Paper-based material

Brief description of the outcomes

Each participant produced a paper which they then read and shared with the group.

Impact on target groups / Transferability potential

It is possible to describe the impact on the target group on three levels:
- cognitive: because it stimulates memory and allows stories to re-emerge that reinforce one's identity and role in society;
- communicative: as elaborating a personal story requires time and a right choice of words and expressions so that the listener can step into the shoes of the narrator and look for similar experiences in their memories, or simply create a connection with the other;
- relational: having practiced remembering and narrating it, gets used to listening, teaches us to wait, creates sharing and closeness with the other.
This good practice can also be used with other targets, it should be noted that in another project currently underway, Upter will prepare to use this methodology with foreign citizens.
