INTERCULT: INTERCULTURAL TRAINERS KIT FOR MIGRANTS’ EDUCATORS

INTERCULT is a European cooperation project, funded under the Erasmus+ programme,aimed at improving the intercultural skills of educators for delivering efficient language training to adult migrants. InterCult developedan Intercultural Trainers Kit which provides different methodologies and techniques for improving educators’ skills related to mutual understanding, cultural dialogue, tolerance and inclusion, awareness raising on cultural specifics of migrants and utilization of opportunities to use these specifics in a learning environment.

The aims of the project were:

  • To improve the intercultural skills of adult educators working with migrants through a variety of active learning methods for promoting interculturalism, tolerance and equality in the classroom.
  • To develop intercultural language teaching multimedia resources to be applied with adult migrants.
  • To improve the effectiveness of the language teaching process and thus to motivate migrants to get involved in learning.
  • To exchange experience and good practices on successful methodologies for migrant integration at European level.
  • To promote intercultural dialogue.

Methodology

The Intercultural trainers Kit is designed for educators working with migrants to improve their intercultural skills related to mutual understanding, cultural dialogue, tolerance and inclusion, awareness raising on cultural specifics of migrants and utilization of opportunities to use these specifics in a learning environment. The tool provides principles and practice of interculturalism in language education and guidelines for work in a multicultural environment. It includes over 20 teaching techniques as well as an Interactive space where users can test their knowledge.

The collection of good practices includes more than 35 good practices providing successful methods and approaches for work in a multicultural environment, promotion of tolerance, diversity and inclusion in the learning process, application of intercultural teaching resources, raising the participation and attainment of adult migrants in the educational process, etc. The good practices are grouped within 5 sections – Promotion of intercultural skills of adult educators, Promotion of tolerance, diversity and inclusion in the learning process, Application of intercultural teaching resources, Raising the participation and attainment of adult migrants in the educational process, Training of teachers working with adult migrants.

The train the trainer programme is designed for training educators working with migrants to use and apply the Intercultural trainers’ kit in a learning environment. It contains 16 hours of face-to-face learning and 8 hours of self-directed learning covering two modules:

  • Module 1: Promoting mutual understanding and cultural dialogue
  • Module 2: Promoting interculturalism, tolerance and diversity in the learning process.

Impact on target groups / Transferability potential

The project aimed at improving educators´ intercultural skills for delivering efficient language training to adult migrants by putting in place efficient work models between migrant organizations, language educators and migrants. The project also connects relevant stakeholders from each partner country, providing them with new methods for improving teaching competences, increasing motivation for language learning and participation in the educational systems of the host countries. The national networks of associated partners, migrant organizations, language educators and individuals will be able to build new cooperation models for influencing policy-makers at local, regional and national level for improving the life conditions, social integration and learning opportunities of migrants.

The main output, the Intercultural Trainers Kit, was developed by the partners in a way that provided the highest possible flexibility and adaptability, reflecting teaching and learning needs of various groups applicable also in other countries besides the ones involved in the consortium. This allows transferability and adaptability very easily to other countries, languages and even other target groups and target sectors.
